Chapter 4 - The Staged Scene.

Detective Bennett pulled up a chair and sat heavily beside my hospital bed.
She explained that David’s death was initially staged to look like a suicide caused by immense guilt.
A typed suicide note was found on his kitchen counter, confessing to locking me inside the house.
The note claimed that Jason had absolutely nothing to do with the terrible crime.
It was a perfect setup designed to completely clear my husband of any suspicion.
However, the forensic team had discovered a massive flaw in the staged scene.
The ink on the printed suicide note was printed using a brand of paper that David did not even own.
Furthermore, the autopsy revealed defensive bruises on David’s arms that proved he had fought back.
Someone had murdered David to tie up the only loose end that could connect Jason to the crime.
I realized that Jason’s family might be deeply involved in this sinister conspiracy.
His parents and his sister had insisted on this specific seventy-four-day European vacation.
They provided the perfect smokescreen while professional killers handled the dirty work back home.
I asked Detective Bennett what we were supposed to do now that our only witness was dead.
She smiled thinly and told me that she had a highly unconventional plan.
Jason fully expected to return to an empty house with a tragic, decomposed body inside.
If the police arrested him now, he would use his wealth and his family's alibi to fight the charges.
We needed to catch him in a lie so massive that no highly paid lawyer could ever save him.
The detective proposed that I legally vanish for the next seventy days to let Jason think his master plan had succeeded.
I agreed to the dangerous plan, completely unaware of the terrifying risk I was taking.
As I gathered my things to leave for the secret safehouse, my phone suddenly buzzed with a new text message.
May you like
The message was from an unknown number and contained only four terrifying words.
"I see you leaving."
