Chapter 2 - The Rescue.

The shadowy figure at the window did not move to help me.
Instead, the person simply smiled and walked away into the dense woods behind our house.
I forced myself to focus on the emergency dispatcher speaking through the dying phone.
I gave her my name and my exact street address before the battery finally died.
The screen went black, leaving me in total silence.
I collapsed onto the cold kitchen floor, feeling my body begin to shut down from the lack of medication.
Minutes felt like hours as my vision blurred and my breathing became shallow.
Suddenly, I heard heavy pounding at the front door.
A loud voice yelled out for anyone inside the house.
I tried to scream, but my throat burned and only a dry whisper came out.
I heard the sound of shattering glass coming from the back entrance.
Firefighters broke through the heavy wooden door and rushed into the kitchen.
They found me lying beside the table and immediately called for paramedics.
I faded in and out of consciousness during the frantic ambulance ride to the hospital.
When I finally woke up, I was lying in a bright hospital room connected to several medical monitors.
My doctor walked in and told me that I had been only hours away from a life-threatening crisis.
I thought the worst part of this nightmare was finally over.
Then Detective Laura Bennett walked into my room and placed a stack of photographs on my blanket.
The security footage clearly showed Jason returning to the house after his family left for the airport.

He was not just carrying my medication out of the house.
He was handing a thick stack of cash to the exact same shadowy figure I had seen outside my window.
