Chapter 1 - The Empty House.

I was too weak to stand when my husband zipped his suitcase and smiled.

“You will be fine for a few weeks,” he said smoothly before leaving for Europe with his family.

I was recovering from a serious autoimmune flare that left me dependent on daily medication.

My doctor had warned me not to miss even one single dose.

Jason knew that better than anyone because he had attended every medical appointment.

The morning they left, Jason brought me tea and placed my pill organizer on the nightstand.

He kissed my forehead and promised to call me as soon as he reached the airport.

Two hours later, I slowly reached for my daily pills.

The organizer was completely empty.

I dragged myself out of bed and searched every drawer in the master bathroom.

My prescription bottles were completely gone.

When I tried to call Jason, my cell phone showed absolutely no signal.

The Wi-Fi router in the hallway had been completely disconnected and removed.

Then the lights in the house flickered and went out.

I crawled into the bathroom and turned on the faucet.

Nothing but a dry hiss came out of the pipes.

Panic rose in my chest as I forced myself to walk down the stairs.

I made my way to the front door, but the deadbolt would not move at all.

Someone had locked it from the outside using a specialized key.

The back door was secured the exact same way.

I noticed that several of the ground-floor windows had been screwed shut with heavy metal brackets.

That was the terrifying moment when I finally understood the truth.

Jason had not simply abandoned me while he went on a family vacation.

He had carefully prepared our home to become my permanent tomb.

I dragged myself toward the kitchen, praying I would find a way out.

I found a small emergency phone hidden in the back of an old junk drawer.

The battery icon flashed red, showing only six percent remaining.

May you like

I dialed the emergency number and held the phone to my trembling ear.

A dispatcher answered, but before I could speak, a shadowy figure stepped in front of the kitchen window and stared directly at me.
