Chapter 8 - The Decoy

I stared down at the bundle of medical towels wrapped inside the blue blanket.
It was a cruel, sickening decoy.
I looked up to see Dr. Marcus Vance standing near the stairwell door.
He was holding a smoking handgun, his face completely unreadable.
Bradley was writhing on the ground, clutching his bleeding shoulder.
Marcus walked slowly across the roof, ignoring Bradley's screams of pain.
I asked Marcus where my real baby was.
Marcus pointed his gun directly at the helicopter on the helipad.
He ordered the pilot to shut down the engines immediately.
The rotors slowly spun to a halt, plunging the roof into eerie silence.
The wealthy buyer stepped out of the helicopter with his hands raised.
He was holding a specialized travel incubator.
Inside the clear plastic case, I could see my beautiful, sleeping son.
Marcus ordered the man to place the incubator on the ground and step away.
The buyer complied, trembling in absolute fear.
I ran to the incubator, falling to my knees beside it.
I opened the lid and touched my baby's soft, warm cheek for the first time.
Tears of pure joy blinded me.
Marcus walked over and kicked Bradley hard in the ribs.
Marcus declared that Bradley's illegal syndicate was officially dismantled.
He pulled out a radio and called for the police to swarm the roof.
I looked up at Marcus, feeling an overwhelming sense of gratitude.
I thanked him for saving my life and my child.

Marcus smiled warmly and helped me stand up.
He said it was his duty to protect his finest chief of emergency medicine.
