Chapter 1 - The Broken Steel

Then he opened his mouth to give another cruel order.
He never got the chance to speak.
The fetal heart monitor let out a long, continuous scream.
The jagged green line on the screen plummeted into a terrifying flatline.
My baby was dying inside of me.
Bradley froze in absolute shock.
His arrogant composure shattered instantly as he stared at the red warning lights.
He stepped backward, his hands shaking as panic finally consumed him.
He clutched his chest, gasping for air.
Then his eyes rolled back into his head.
Dr. Bradley Jenkins collapsed hard onto the delivery room floor.
He was completely unconscious.
The assisting nurse screamed for help.
Hannah rushed to Bradley's side, ignoring my dying baby.
I did not have time to care about my husband's sudden cardiac event.
I swung the heavy, broken steel bed rail toward the wall.
I smashed the red emergency code button until the plastic casing shattered.
Sirens immediately blared through the maternity ward.
The heavy double doors flew open.
Dr. Marcus Vance, the Chief of Surgery, stormed into the room.
He took one look at Bradley on the floor and my failing monitors.
He ordered the nurses to prep me for an immediate crash C-section.
As the anesthesia mask came down over my face, I saw Hannah looking at me.
