Chapter 7 - The Rooftop Standoff

The freezing night wind whipped across the hospital roof.

A private helicopter waited on the helipad, its rotors spinning loudly.

The wealthy buyer was already sitting inside the aircraft.

Bradley stood near the ledge, clutching my crying newborn wrapped in a blue blanket.

I screamed his name, begging him to step away from the edge.

Bradley turned to face me, his eyes entirely devoid of humanity.

He looked annoyed that I had managed to survive this long.

He told me that I had ruined a perfectly flawless business transaction.

I slowly walked toward him, keeping my hands raised in surrender.

I offered him all of my family wealth, my hospital shares, and my medical patents.

I told him he could take everything I owned if he just gave me my son.

Bradley chuckled darkly over the roar of the helicopter.

He said my money was already legally his since I was a documented psychiatric patient.

He held the baby further out over the dark, sprawling city below.

He stated that it was much easier to claim the grieving widower narrative.

My heart pounded so hard I thought my chest would break open.

I calculated the distance between us, knowing I could not reach him in time.

Suddenly, a gunshot echoed across the rooftop.

Bradley screamed as a bullet tore through his shoulder.

He stumbled backward, dropping the blue blanket.

I dove across the rough concrete, catching the blanket before it fell off the ledge.

I pulled the bundle to my chest, crying tears of sheer relief.

Then I looked down at the blanket in my arms.

There was no baby inside.
