Chapter 5 - The Black Market

My blood ran completely cold as I listened to their conversation through the intercom speaker.

The wealthy man examined the medical file with a greedy smile.

He praised the perfect genetic pedigree of two brilliant chief physicians.

Bradley casually negotiated a price of five million dollars for my newborn son.

I felt a sickening surge of absolute rage.

My husband had planned this dark betrayal from the very beginning.

Hannah walked into the laboratory holding a silver briefcase.

She opened the briefcase to reveal stacks of hundred-dollar bills.

Hannah was not a helpless intern; she was the financial broker for a black-market adoption ring.

I knew I could not fight armed mercenaries in my current physical condition.

I needed to cause a massive, hospital-wide distraction to force an evacuation.

I noticed a large oxygen supply tank connected to the facility's ventilation system.

Next to it was a specialized chemical storage cabinet.

I used my master keycard to open the cabinet.

I grabbed two bottles of highly reactive cleaning chemicals.

I mixed them together in a metal basin, creating a thick, noxious smoke.

I placed the basin directly under the primary ventilation intake.

Within seconds, the smoke alarms began to blare with deafening intensity.

The automated fire suppression doors slammed shut.

The mercenaries panicked and began running toward the emergency exits.

I seized my opportunity and sprinted toward the secure nursery room at the end of the hall.

I kicked the door open.

The room was completely empty.
