Chapter 10 - The Ultimate Betrayal

I sat up slightly, wincing at the sharp pain in my abdomen.
The atmosphere inside the ambulance had shifted from comforting to suffocating.
I asked Marcus again where we were heading.
Marcus sat down on the bench across from me, his warm smile completely gone.
He stared at me with cold, dead eyes.
He explained that Bradley was a greedy, arrogant fool who got sloppy.
He said Bradley started stealing clients from the primary syndicate.
I felt a cold shiver trace its way down my spine.
I asked him what he meant by the primary syndicate.
Marcus smoothly adjusted his expensive suit jacket.
He revealed that he was the true mastermind behind the hospital's black-market operations.
He had only shot Bradley to eliminate his biggest business rival.
My breath caught in my throat as the horrifying reality set in.
I reached for my baby, pulling him tight against my chest.
Marcus pulled a suppressed pistol from his jacket and aimed it at me.
He told me that I was a brilliant doctor, but a terrible chess player.
He tossed a legal document onto my lap.
It was a contract signing over my hospital shares and my personal wealth to him.
He smiled coldly and handed me a pen.
He told me to sign the document immediately.
I refused, telling him I would rather die than give him my hospital.
Marcus laughed, a dark and terrifying sound.
He looked at my sleeping son and checked his watch.

He told me that the pain medication the paramedics just gave me was actually a slow-acting paralytic.
He leaned in close and whispered that my lungs would stop working in exactly four minutes.
