Chapter 4 - The Hidden Floor

The note contained only three words.
It read: Sub-basement level four.
My hospital only officially had three sub-basement levels.
The fourth level was a condemned storage area that had been sealed off a decade ago.
I gritted my teeth against the agonizing pain in my abdomen.
I ripped the IV line out of my arm, pressing a piece of gauze to stop the bleeding.
I swung my legs over the side of the bed.
My knees buckled, but I caught myself against the wall.
I found a doctor's lab coat hanging in the closet and put it on over my gown.
I slowly opened the door to my room.
The two guards were standing down the hall, distracted by a spilled coffee cart.
Chloe had orchestrated the perfect distraction.
I slipped out of the room and made my way to the service elevator.
I swiped the master keycard, and the elevator doors opened.
I pressed the button for the lowest possible level.
When the doors parted, I expected to see dusty boxes and broken medical equipment.
Instead, I stepped into a pristine, high-tech medical facility.
The walls were bright white, and armed mercenaries stood at the ends of the corridor.
I hid behind a large supply cart, holding my breath.
Through a glass window, I saw Bradley standing in a laboratory.
He was talking to a wealthy-looking man in a tailored suit.
Bradley handed the man a folder containing my son's medical records.

I realized my husband was not just trying to take my baby away from me.
He was selling my son to the highest bidder.
