Chapter 8 - The Price of Blood

I clapped a hand over my mouth, biting my own palm to muffle my gasp of pure, soul-crushing horror.
My father had completely disowned me a decade ago when I refused to join his corrupt, cutthroat corporate empire.
He had always viewed people as assets, but I never imagined he would treat his own flesh and blood as disposable inventory.
Now, he was laughing with Cameron about how perfectly their twisted, multi-year plan worked out.
"I engineered her meeting with you during your residency just to breed a viable genetic match," my father admitted proudly.
Cameron nodded eagerly, stating that he never actually loved me and only endured the marriage for the billionaire's limitless research grants.
"Getting rid of Amelia was always part of the business deal, Arthur," Cameron assured him with a chilling lack of emotion.
I pulled out the burner phone, my hands shaking violently as I opened the voice recorder application.
I pressed record, capturing every sickening word of their confession, every detail of their vile conspiracy.
I finally had the irrefutable evidence I needed to destroy all of them and take my life back.
I prepared to push the doors open and confront the monsters who ruined my life.
Suddenly, a dark shadow fell over me, blocking out the red emergency lights of the hallway.
A hand violently grabbed a fistful of my hair, yanking my head back with agonizing force.
Sophie dragged me away from the doors, throwing me brutally against the hard drywall of the corridor.
I hit the ground hard, gasping for breath as she stood over me with a victorious, psychotic smirk.
"You just could not stay in your cage, could you, Amelia?" Sophie sneered, kicking me in the ribs.
She dragged me by my hospital gown and shoved me roughly into a small, windowless janitorial storage closet.
Before I could fight back, she slammed the heavy door shut and slid the exterior deadbolt into place.

"Goodbye, Doctor Grant," Sophie's voice echoed through the thin wood.
I heard the distinct flick of a lighter, followed by the terrifying whoosh of chemical solvent igniting into a raging fire.
