Chapter 10 - The Reckoning

The police officers immediately drew their weapons, aiming directly at my chest.

"Drop the baby and get on the ground right now!" the lead officer commanded, his finger tense on the trigger.

Cameron stood behind them, playing the role of the terrified, victimized father to absolute perfection.

I stood incredibly tall, refusing to let go of my beautiful, innocent son despite the dozens of guns pointed at me.

"I am Doctor Amelia Grant, the Chief of Emergency Medicine at this hospital, and I am invoking a Code Black administrative override!" I shouted with absolute authority.

The officers hesitated for a fraction of a second, confused by my clear, commanding tone.

I pulled out the stolen burner phone and quickly connected it to the lobby's PA system via the open Bluetooth network.

I pressed play on the audio file I recorded outside the presidential suite just minutes ago.

The recorded voices of Cameron, my father, and Sophie plotting the murder and genetic theft echoed deafeningly through the entire lobby.

The officers listened in stunned silence as Cameron admitted to faking my insanity and planning to harvest the infant's stem cells.

The lead officer immediately lowered his weapon and signaled for his team to stand down.

He turned around, glaring furiously at Cameron, who was suddenly trembling like a cornered rat.

Handcuffs were violently slapped onto Cameron's wrists as he desperately begged for a legal deal that would never come.

Sophie and my father were dragged out of the building in absolute disgrace, facing multiple decades in federal prison.

Paramedics rushed to my side, treating my burns and confirming my beautiful baby boy was completely unharmed.

Six months later, I sat in the Hospital Director's office, watching my healthy son sleep peacefully in his bassinet.

Cameron and his co-conspirators were denied bail, their corrupt empires dismantled and sold off.

The nightmare was completely over, and I had finally won my ultimate freedom and peace.

I smiled as I packed up my desk, ready to go home and enjoy a beautiful, quiet weekend with my baby.

The doorbell suddenly rang, interrupting our quiet morning together the next day.

I opened the front door to find a heavy black envelope with no return address resting on the welcome mat.

Inside was a photograph of my son sleeping in his crib, taken through my bedroom window just last night.

A handwritten note on the back of the photo simply read, "We are still coming to collect what is owed to us."
