Chapter 4 - The Lethal Dose

Sophie hummed a cheerful, upbeat tune as she tapped the side of the lethal syringe to remove any air bubbles.

She believed she had already won, completely oblivious to the fact that the paralytic drug was out of my system.

"Cameron is too much of a coward to finish the job himself," Sophie whispered to my supposedly unconscious body.

"But I am perfectly fine with tying up loose ends to protect my company's investment."

She reached for the central line inserted near my collarbone, her sharp nails grazing my skin.

Adrenaline flooded my bloodstream, instantly overriding the remaining weakness in my muscles.

Just as the needle tip touched the plastic port of my IV, I struck with the speed of a cornered predator.

My hand shot up, grabbing Sophie's wrist in a vise-like grip that made her gasp in absolute shock.

I twisted her arm violently, forcing her fingers to release the syringe.

The plastic tube clattered harmlessly to the hospital floor, spilling the deadly potassium chloride onto the linoleum.

Sophie's eyes widened in pure, unadulterated terror as she realized I was fully awake and entirely lucid.

I sat up, pulling her down by her expensive silk collar until our faces were mere inches apart.

"You made a terrible mistake coming into my hospital, Sophie," I snarled, my voice dripping with lethal promise.

She struggled frantically, trying to pry my fingers off her throat, but my maternal rage gave me terrifying strength.

"I am going to destroy you, I am going to destroy Cameron, and I am getting my son back," I vowed.

Sophie realized she could not physically overpower me, so she resorted to her only remaining weapon.

She slammed her free hand against the red emergency panic button on the wall behind my bed.

She immediately began to scream at the top of her lungs, faking tears of absolute terror.

"Help me, somebody help me, the patient is having a violent psychotic break!" Sophie shrieked hysterically.

Heavy boots pounded down the hallway, and the doors burst open as four armed hospital security guards rushed inside.

Cameron followed right behind them, his face turning pale as he saw me sitting upright and fighting back.

I pointed a shaking finger at Sophie, demanding they arrest her for attempted murder.

"She just tried to inject me with potassium chloride, the syringe is right there on the floor!" I shouted desperately.

Cameron stepped forward, smoothly kicking the syringe under the bed frame where the guards could not see it.

He looked at the security team with a perfectly practiced expression of deep, sorrowful pity.

"My wife's brain damage has triggered severe, violent postpartum psychosis," Cameron lied flawlessly.

"Restrain her immediately, and prepare her for an involuntary transfer to the maximum security psychiatric ward."
