Chapter 5 - The Asylum Walls

The security guards lunged forward, grabbing my arms and pinning me brutally against the mattress.
I fought with everything I had, kicking and screaming that Cameron was trying to murder me and steal my baby.
"Check the floor, check the security cameras, he sold our child!" I screamed hysterically.
My desperate pleas only made me look exactly like the insane, paranoid woman Cameron claimed I was.
Cameron pulled a fresh syringe from his coat pocket and clinically injected a heavy sedative into my thigh.
The fight drained from my body in seconds, replaced by a heavy, suffocating darkness.
When I finally opened my eyes again, the sterile ICU was gone, replaced by the padded white walls of the psychiatric wing.
There were no windows, no clocks, and no handles on the inside of the heavy steel door.
I was completely locked away from the rest of the world, officially declared mentally incompetent by my own husband.
I paced the small room, my mind racing through the horrific reality of my situation.
I noticed a sympathetic janitor sweeping the hallway outside, glancing nervously through the reinforced glass window of my door.
I pressed my face against the glass and held up my hand, showing him my diamond engagement ring.
I pantomimed a phone call, silently begging him to help me make one single connection to the outside world.
Greed won over his fear of the hospital rules, and he cautiously slid his master keycard and a cell phone under the door gap.
I slid the expensive diamond ring back out to him, praying the phone had enough battery left.
I dialed the private number of Doctor Wallace, my lifelong mentor and the Chief of Staff for the entire hospital.
He answered on the second ring, and I quickly explained the horrific truth about Cameron, Sophie, and the stolen baby.
Doctor Wallace promised to come down immediately with a team of lawyers to secure my release and launch an investigation.
Relief washed over me, and I sat on the padded floor, finally feeling a glimmer of real hope.
An hour later, the heavy steel door unlocked, and Doctor Wallace walked in flanked by two men in expensive suits.
I stood up to hug the man who taught me everything I knew about medicine.
He did not reach out to hug me back.
Instead, Doctor Wallace looked at me with cold, dead eyes that held absolutely no sympathy.
He turned to the lawyers and handed them a stack of freshly signed documents bearing the hospital's official seal.

"Cameron is entirely correct, gentlemen," Doctor Wallace announced in a monotone voice.
"Doctor Grant is severely schizophrenic, and her permanent institutionalization is absolutely necessary for public safety."
