Chapter 2 - The Silent Prisoner

I spent the entire night fighting against the heavy sedation keeping my muscles locked in place.
Every second felt like an eternity of suffocating darkness and silent screams.
My mind was completely awake, but my body was a useless, broken prison.
I focused all of my medical training on regulating my breathing to avoid triggering the alarms.
I needed to prove to myself that I was still alive, still capable of fighting back.
Slowly, miraculously, I managed to flutter my eyelashes just a fraction of an inch.
It was a tiny victory, but it gave me a massive surge of desperate hope.
The door to my ICU room hissed open, and soft rubber soles squeaked across the floor.
Nurse Clara, one of my most trusted colleagues from the ER, approached my bedside.
She was adjusting my IV line when she noticed the faint, rhythmic twitching of my fingers.
Clara gasped softly, leaning in close so her face was inches from mine.
"Doctor Grant, if you can hear me, blink twice," Clara whispered frantically.
I poured every ounce of my willpower into forcing my heavy eyelids to obey her command.
One blink.
Two blinks.
Clara let out a choked sob, tears welling up in her kind eyes.
"Oh thank God, you are in there," she breathed, quickly checking the hallway for eavesdroppers.
"Cameron told the entire hospital board that your brain went without oxygen for too long."
My heart hammered violently against my ribs as the depth of his lies truly sank in.
"He filed emergency guardianship papers this morning to take complete control of your medical care."
Clara pulled a small mirror from her pocket and held it up so I could see the reflection of the door.
Suddenly, the handle turned, and Cameron marched into the room without knocking.
Clara immediately pretended to be checking my blood pressure, masking her panic perfectly.
"Leave us, Nurse Clara, I need a moment alone with my wife," Cameron ordered coldly.
Clara nodded obediently and slipped out of the room, leaving me completely at his mercy.
Cameron leaned over my bed, his face so close I could smell the stale coffee on his breath.
"You always thought you were smarter than me, Amelia," he sneered, assuming I was deaf to the world.
"But now you are just a vegetable, and I am the grieving hero who tried to save you."
He stroked my cheek, the touch making my skin crawl with absolute revulsion.
"The board granted me full custody of our son an hour ago."
I tried to scream, but only a pathetic, gurgling sound escaped my plastic ventilator tube.
Cameron smiled, a twisted, sadistic grin that chilled me to my very core.

"Do not bother trying to wake up, darling."
"Our baby is already miles away, hidden in a facility where you will never, ever find him."
