Chapter 1 - The Shattered Trust

The EKG monitor shrieked its continuous, ear-piercing alarm.
Panic erupted like wildfire across the sterile delivery room.
Cameron stood completely frozen, his arrogant composure crumbling as he stared at the flatline.
He dropped his surgical instruments, the metallic clatter lost beneath the screaming machines.
He did not look like a seasoned attending physician anymore.
He looked like a man who had just realized the catastrophic consequence of his own ego.
Doctor Evans, the senior anesthesiologist, shoved Cameron out of the way with ruthless force.
"Push one milligram of epinephrine right now!" Doctor Evans barked at the terrified nursing staff.
I tried to speak, to ask if my baby was safe, but my throat was entirely paralyzed.
My vision faded rapidly into a terrifying, suffocating darkness.
I could no longer feel the agonizing pain tearing through my pelvis.
I could no longer feel the warm weight of my newborn son being carried away.
All I felt was a freezing cold sweeping relentlessly through my veins.
Somewhere in the distant haze, I heard the frantic, rhythmic thud of aggressive chest compressions.
"We are losing her, charge the paddles to two hundred!" Doctor Evans yelled desperately.
My body convulsed violently off the stainless steel operating table as the electricity hit my chest.
The monitor refused to alter its deadly, high-pitched tone.
"Charge to three hundred, stay with us, Amelia!" Doctor Evans pleaded, his hands slippery with my blood.
The second shock hit harder than the first, shattering my remaining connection to reality.
The darkness finally swallowed me whole, dragging me down into an endless, silent void.
Time ceased to exist in that terrifying abyss.
Eventually, a harsh, fluorescent light pierced through the heavy veil of my closed eyelids.
I tried to gasp for a desperate breath of air.
Instead, I choked on the thick plastic ventilator tube shoved aggressively down my throat.
I tried to open my eyes, but my eyelids felt as if they were sewn shut with solid lead.
I commanded my fingers to twitch, but absolutely nothing happened.
My entire body was completely, terrifyingly paralyzed.
I was a prisoner trapped inside the broken shell of my own body.
Then, the unmistakable sound of my husband's dress shoes clicked against the linoleum floor.
He was not alone.
"The hypoxic brain damage is extensive, and she will never wake up," Cameron said smoothly.
His voice held absolutely no sorrow, no grief, and no regret.
"Are you absolutely sure she cannot hear us right now?" a woman's voice replied nervously.
I recognized that sickly sweet, manipulative tone immediately.
It was Sophie, the intern who had intentionally dug her nails into my arm during my labor.
"Even if she can hear us, she is completely powerless to stop our plan," Cameron chuckled coldly.
"The legal paperwork is already filed, giving me absolute control over her medical proxy and our new son."
Sophie sighed in relief, the sound making my blood boil with silent rage.

"We finally have the baby, Cameron, just like you promised."
"And tomorrow morning," Cameron whispered softly, "I will sign the authorization to terminate her life support."
