Chapter 8 - The Iron Gate

The freezing black water rose relentlessly, creeping dangerously up to our chests.
I held Noah as high as I physically could, pressing his tiny back against the curved concrete ceiling of the tunnel.
He was crying weakly now, his precious energy entirely depleted by the agonizing cold.
Emily waded aggressively toward the rusted iron grate, fighting against the strong, pulling current of the incoming tide.
She grabbed the thick iron bars and pulled with every ounce of strength in her exhausted body.
The ancient metal groaned loudly but refused to yield even a single millimeter.
"It is bolted directly into the concrete foundation!" Emily shouted over the roaring sound of the rushing water.
The water level reached my chin, forcing me to tilt my head back just to breathe the stale air.
"We are going to drown in here!" I yelled in absolute despair, kissing Noah's freezing forehead.
Emily took a massive, deep breath and suddenly dove completely underwater into the murky darkness.
I waited in sheer terror for what felt like an eternity, praying she had not been swept away by the undertow.
A loud, metallic screech echoed beneath the water, vibrating intensely against my cold legs.
Emily burst through the surface, gasping desperately for air and holding a heavy iron maintenance wrench.
She had found a submerged utility box and ripped the heavy tool free from its mounting bracket.
She took another deep breath and vanished below the freezing surface once again.
I heard the heavy wrench smashing violently against the rusted bolts of the iron grate over and over again.
The water touched Noah's tiny toes, and he let out a sharp, pathetic wail of misery.
Just as the water completely covered my mouth, the heavy iron grate gave way with a sickening crack.
The immense pressure of the trapped water violently sucked us all forward through the newly opened gap.
We tumbled wildly through the rushing current, blinded by the dark, salty water thrashing around us.
I hit the soft sand of the private beach, coughing up seawater and gasping greedily for the sweet night air.
Emily washed up right beside me, completely exhausted and shivering violently in the heavy rain.
I looked down and praised God when I saw Noah was still breathing safely in my arms.
We had miraculously survived the flooded tunnel and escaped the burning mansion.

Then, the blinding beam of a high-powered tactical spotlight hit us directly in our faces.
A dozen heavily armed Russian mercenaries stood waiting on the beach, led by their ruthless boss, Viktor.
