Chapter 17 - The Confession

The heavy gunfire outside echoed through the thick concrete walls, vibrating the floor beneath their feet.

Michael stared at Emily, the urgency of the brutal siege entirely pausing as he read the severe gravity in her eyes.

"I was not hired to protect you, Michael," Emily confessed, keeping her voice incredibly steady despite the fear in her chest.

"I am a black-ops assassin, and I was embedded in your house to kill you and abduct your son."

Michael froze completely, the heavy assault rifle lowering slightly in his muscular arms.

The absolute trust in his dark eyes instantly shattered, replaced by a devastating, agonizing betrayal.

"You poisoned Noah," he whispered, his voice cracking under the unbearable weight of the horrific realization.

"No, Margaret acted independently because she was blackmailed by Viktor," Emily quickly corrected, stepping forward.

"But my handler allowed the attack to happen to accelerate my insertion into your inner circle."

Michael raised his weapon in a flash of blinding rage, aiming the barrel directly at her chest.

"Give me one good reason why I shouldn't blow you straight to hell right now," Michael roared, his finger tightening on the trigger.

Emily did not flinch, she did not beg, she simply looked him directly in the eyes with absolute sincerity.

"Because I found out the truth about your digital servers, and I realized my handler is a corrupt monster," Emily pleaded.

"I aborted my mission, I shot the assassin in the ballroom, and I am the only reason you are still breathing."

A massive explosion violently shook the security hub, showering them both in falling ceiling tiles and sparks.

On the security monitors, Vanguard’s elite operators were systematically slaughtering Michael’s loyal guards in the courtyard.

They were moving flawlessly toward the north wing, heading directly toward the heavily fortified nursery.

"They are going for Noah," Emily warned, gesturing frantically to the glowing screens.

Michael looked at the monitors, then looked back at the woman who had lied to him for three years.

He slowly lowered his weapon, his jaw clenched so tightly it looked like it might shatter.

"If we survive this night, you are never coming near my son again," Michael promised coldly.

"But right now, I need your tactical expertise to keep him alive."

Emily nodded, accepting his justified hatred as the price for her redemption.

She grabbed a heavy tactical shotgun from the wall rack and loaded it with armor-piercing slugs.

"The operators are using thermal optics, they can see our heat signatures through the walls," Emily explained rapidly.

"We need to vent the liquid cooling lines from the server room into the ventilation shafts to blind their scopes."

Michael didn't hesitate, he immediately engaged the emergency release valves on the master control console.

A freezing, thick white fog instantly flooded the hallways of the sanctuary, completely plunging the compound into absolute chaos.

"Follow me, we are going to war," Emily commanded, disappearing into the blinding white mist.
