Chapter 1 - The Cold Truth

Emily grabbed the heavy thermal blanket and violently ripped it away from my dying son.

The lead paramedic shouted in protest and reached for her slender arm.

Frank drew his weapon immediately, the metallic click echoing through the chaotic nursery.

"Shoot her!" the night nanny, Margaret, screamed from the doorway.

I raised my hand swiftly, forcing Frank to freeze with his finger on the heavy trigger.

Emily completely ignored the loaded gun pointed directly at her back.

She lunged toward the medical cart and snatched two instant chemical ice packs.

With a sharp twist of her wrists, she cracked the plastic seals to activate the freezing chemicals.

She pressed the freezing packs directly against the major arteries on Noah's tiny neck and chest.

"What the hell are you doing?" the lead paramedic roared, pushing forward again.

Emily shoved the large man back with a terrifying, unexpected strength.

"You are dealing with a heat-activated synthetic neurotoxin, you absolute idiot!" Emily screamed at him.

"The thermal blanket was rapidly accelerating the poison through his tiny bloodstream."

Every professional in the room stood completely paralyzed by the maid's flawless medical terminology.

I dropped to my knees beside her, my heart hammering violently against my ribs.

For ten agonizing seconds, the only sound in the room was the relentless thunderstorm raging outside.

Then, Noah's chest suddenly heaved upward with a sharp, desperate gasp.

His blue lips slowly flushed into a healthy pink as he let out a deafening, furious cry.

I collapsed forward in sheer relief, burying my face against my son's freezing little hand.

Emily did not smile or celebrate her miraculous intervention.

She turned her cold, calculating eyes slowly toward the doorway.

"Lock the doors, Michael," Emily ordered me, using my first name without a trace of fear.

I looked up in absolute confusion, wondering how my quiet maid had suddenly become a commanding general.

"Nobody leaves this room, because whoever poisoned his bottle is still standing right here," Emily declared.

Before Frank could even move to secure the hallway, Margaret turned on her heel and sprinted into the darkness.
