Chapter 14 - The Execution

Emily took the heavy weapon from Michael’s outstretched hand, her face an unreadable mask of cold stone.

She walked slowly around the metal table, her boots clicking ominously against the concrete floor.

Frank's defiant sneer rapidly dissolved into genuine, unadulterated terror as he realized his manipulation had completely failed.

"Michael, please, you are making a fatal mistake!" Frank begged, straining violently against the thick leather restraints.

"She is going to murder you and sell the child to the highest bidder!"

Emily stopped directly in front of Frank, raising the barrel of the gun until it pressed firmly against his bruised forehead.

She looked deep into the eyes of the man who had ordered the poisoning of an innocent baby.

He was a traitor, a murderer, and a miserable coward.

Pulling the trigger wouldn't just protect her cover; it would be genuine justice for what he did to Noah.

"You chose the wrong side, Frank," Emily whispered softly, just loud enough for him to hear.

She pulled the trigger without a single flinch.

The deafening gunshot echoed violently inside the small concrete room.

Frank's body slumped forward against the heavy leather straps, completely lifeless.

Emily engaged the safety and calmly handed the smoking weapon back to Michael.

Michael stared at her, an undeniable mixture of awe and intimidation burning in his dark eyes.

"You did not even blink," Michael noted quietly, holstering his weapon.

"He threatened your son, sir," Emily replied smoothly, reciting the exact protocol for establishing absolute loyalty.

"In my line of work, we do not leave threats breathing."

Michael nodded slowly, the last remaining shred of doubt completely vanishing from his mind.

He placed a heavy, trusting hand on her shoulder and guided her out of the blood-stained interrogation room.

As they walked back into the sunlight of the courtyard, Emily felt the burner phone vibrate aggressively in her pocket.

She excused herself to the security monitoring room, locking the heavy steel door before checking the encrypted screen.

It was a direct message from Vanguard, and the tone was completely devoid of its usual patience.

"Frank's failure accelerates the timeline. The international syndicates are moving to bypass the servers tonight."

Emily read the next line, feeling a sudden, suffocating wave of dread crash over her.

"Execute Michael at the victory gala this evening. Retrieve the child. Extraction team will be waiting at the helipad at midnight."

Vanguard was forcing her hand, demanding she murder a good man in cold blood.

She was completely trapped between the deadly intelligence agency that trained her and the innocent family she had sworn to destroy.
