Chapter 12 - The Hidden Vault

The morning sun cast long, golden shadows across the heavily fortified courtyard of Michael's new sanctuary.
Emily walked beside him, wearing a tailored black suit that perfectly concealed her array of tactical weapons.
Michael led her down a pristine, white corridor deep beneath the main estate, far below the reach of any satellite or sniper.
"I need to show you exactly what you are protecting, Emily," Michael said, his voice echoing in the sterile hallway.
They stopped in front of a massive, circular steel vault door that looked like it belonged in a federal reserve bank.
Michael swiped his hand across a glass scanner, and the heavy pneumatic locks hissed loudly as the door swung open.
Emily expected to see stacks of dirty money, stolen gold bullion, or illegal weapons stockpiles.
Instead, the climate-controlled vault was filled with endless rows of highly advanced, humming computer servers.
"This is not a criminal enterprise, Emily, this is a digital fortress," Michael explained, walking into the glowing room.
He pointed to the flashing monitors displaying complex, shifting global maps and endless streams of data.
"My family did not build our wealth by running drugs or guns, we built it by hunting the people who do," he confessed.
Emily froze entirely, her extensive military training struggling to process the massive revelation.
"Viktor attacked us because I recently intercepted a billion-dollar human trafficking ring funded by the Russian syndicate," Michael continued.
He turned to look at Emily, his eyes filled with a fierce, uncompromising sense of justice.
"If I die, these servers shut down, and the worst monsters on this planet will operate completely unchecked."
Emily felt the breath completely leave her lungs as the horrific reality of her mission finally crashed down upon her.
Vanguard had lied to her.
Her handler wasn't a righteous government operative trying to bring down a vicious crime boss.
Vanguard was a shadow broker, trying to eliminate the only man standing in the way of global criminal syndicates.
And they wanted Noah to ensure the bloodline that controlled the servers was extinguished forever.
Emily gripped the handle of her concealed pistol, feeling a violent wave of nausea wash over her.
She had poisoned a baby, manipulated a father, and nearly killed them all for a complete and utter lie.
Suddenly, Michael’s secure radio crackled to life with a frantic, static-filled transmission from the perimeter guards.

"Boss, we just fished a survivor out of the wreckage on the beach," the guard reported urgently.
"It is Frank, sir, and he is demanding to speak to you about the maid."
