Chapter 16 - The Handler's Wrath

The massive sanctuary went into an immediate, total lockdown.

Heavy blast doors slammed shut across every corridor, and red emergency sirens blared violently into the night.

Michael’s loyal guards dragged the dead assassin out of the ballroom while the terrified guests were ushered into the underground bunkers.

Emily stood in the center of the chaotic security hub, her hands trembling slightly as she reloaded her combat pistol.

Her burner phone vibrated continuously in her pocket, a relentless, angry buzzing that demanded her attention.

She finally pulled it out, answering the encrypted call while standing completely alone in the surveillance room.

"You just killed one of my best operatives, Emily," Vanguard's voice hissed through the speaker, completely devoid of its usual calm.

"I had to maintain my cover, he moved too fast and threatened the primary target," Emily lied smoothly.

A dark, terrifying chuckle echoed through the encrypted connection.

"Do not insult my intelligence, you compromised little fool," Vanguard spat venomously.

"You have grown attached to the mark, you fell in love with his pathetic, bleeding heart."

Emily closed her eyes, knowing her brilliant deception had finally unraveled completely.

"Michael is not the villain you claimed he was," Emily shot back, her voice hardening with newfound resolve.

"He is holding back the very syndicates we swore to destroy, and you are trying to hand them the keys to his servers."

"I am the intelligence community, Emily, I decide who the villains are," Vanguard declared arrogantly.

"Since you refuse to eliminate the target, I am going to burn his entire sanctuary to the ground, and you with it."

The line went dead, leaving Emily in a chilling, absolute silence.

She looked up at the wall of security monitors, expecting to see a stealth infiltration team approaching the walls.

Instead, the main perimeter gates suddenly exploded outward in a massive, blinding flash of high-yield explosives.

Three heavily armored tactical vehicles crashed through the burning debris, spilling dozens of elite paramilitary operators into the courtyard.

These were not street thugs or Russian gangsters; these were highly trained ghosts of the international shadow war.

Vanguard was throwing the entire weight of his private black-ops army directly at the compound.

Michael burst into the security hub, carrying an assault rifle and covered in the dust of the explosion.

"They breached the outer wall, we are completely surrounded," Michael reported grimly, chambering a round.

He looked at Emily, his eyes filled with absolute, unwavering trust in her tactical abilities.

"What is our play, Commander?" he asked without hesitation.

Emily looked at the man she had been sent to assassinate, knowing that the truth would completely destroy him.

But if they were going to survive the night, they could not fight with shadows standing between them.

"Before I give you a tactical plan, Michael, there is something you need to know about me," Emily stated firmly.
