Chapter 20 - The Atonement

The harsh, fluorescent lights of the private medical bay blinded Emily as she slowly forced her heavy eyes open.
Her entire body felt like it had been crushed under concrete, radiating with a deep, throbbing agony.
She looked around the sterile room, realizing she was heavily bandaged and connected to multiple glowing monitors.
She had survived the gunshot, but she was completely at the mercy of the man she had originally been sent to destroy.
The heavy door to the medical bay hissed open, and Michael walked quietly into the room.
He looked exhausted, his arm resting in a dark sling, but his eyes were calm and completely clear of anger.
He pulled a chair to the side of her bed and sat down, looking at her in a long, profound silence.
"My brother's black-ops team completely surrendered when they found his body," Michael finally spoke, his voice incredibly soft.
"I used the servers to expose Elias's entire corrupt network to the international authorities."
Emily swallowed hard, preparing herself for the inevitable execution or lifetime imprisonment she absolutely deserved.
"I am ready to accept the consequences for what I did, Michael," Emily rasped, her throat completely dry.
Michael leaned forward, resting his good hand gently over her bruised and bandaged fingers.
"You came into my home as an assassin, Emily, and you lied to me every single day," Michael stated, completely factual.
"But when the moment of truth arrived, you took a bullet meant for my heart, and you saved my son's life twice."
He pulled a small, incredibly secure digital tablet from his pocket and placed it on the table beside her bed.
"I used my resources to completely erase your past," Michael explained, a warm, genuine smile returning to his face.
"The intelligence community thinks you died in the explosion, you are entirely free."
Tears welled in Emily’s eyes, spilling over her eyelashes and running down her scarred, beautiful cheeks.
She had spent her entire adult life fighting in the shadows, waiting for a redemption she never believed would actually come.
"Why are you letting me go?" she whispered, completely overwhelmed by his profound forgiveness.
"Because Noah needs a mother who knows exactly how to protect him from the wolves in the dark," Michael replied simply.
He stood up, walking toward the door, leaving her to process the massive, beautiful second chance she had just been given.
Weeks later, the sanctuary was entirely rebuilt, stronger and more fortified than ever before.
Emily stood on the sunny balcony overlooking the crashing ocean, wearing comfortable clothes and completely unarmed.
She watched Michael playing in the green grass below, laughing loudly as he chased a giggling, completely healthy Noah.
She had arrived as a ghost, intending to bring death and destruction to an evil empire.

Instead, she had found the one thing she had been searching for her entire life.
A family.
