Chapter 2 - The Silent Escape

"Catch her!" I roared at the top of my lungs, my voice tearing through the mansion.

Frank sprinted into the dark hallway, his heavy footsteps thundering across the marble floors.

I carefully scooped my screaming, freezing son into my arms and held him tight against my chest.

Emily immediately began directing the stunned paramedics to administer a saline flush to dilute the remaining toxin.

She moved with the precise, mechanical efficiency of a seasoned combat medic.

"Where did you learn to do that?" I demanded, watching her expertly tape a new IV line to Noah's tiny arm.

Emily kept her eyes firmly locked on the cardiac monitor.

"I was a toxicology specialist for the military before I needed to disappear," she replied coldly.

"Right now, you need to worry about the massive security breach inside your own home."

A loud, terrified shriek echoed from the grand staircase down the hall.

Frank dragged Margaret back into the nursery by the collar of her expensive uniform.

He threw the sobbing night nanny onto the plush rug right at my feet.

"I caught her trying to access the service elevator to the underground garage," Frank reported grimly.

I handed Noah to Emily and stepped toward the woman I had trusted with my child's life.

Margaret curled into a tight ball, weeping hysterically and covering her face with her shaking hands.

"Why did you put poison in my son's bottle, Margaret?" I asked, my voice dropping to a dangerous, lethal whisper.

"They told me it was just a mild sedative to make him sleep through the night!" she sobbed desperately.

"They said they would kill my husband if I refused to drop the powder into the formula."

I grabbed her by the shoulders and hauled her up to eye level.

"Who told you to do it?" I screamed, shaking her violently.

Margaret opened her mouth to speak, but her eyes suddenly rolled back into her skull.

A thick, white foam bubbled rapidly over her lips as her body convulsed violently in my grip.

Emily cursed loudly and rushed forward, checking the dying woman's pulse.

"It was a delayed cyanide capsule hidden in her molar," Emily announced grimly.

Margaret's body went completely limp, taking the identity of her blackmailers directly to her grave.

Suddenly, the deafening roar of a heavy helicopter descending onto the front lawn shook the mansion windows.
