Chapter 8 - The Abandoned Docks

The wind howled aggressively around us as I walked slowly toward the edge of the pier.

I held my cell phone high in the air so Irene could see it.

She ordered me to stop walking and execute the transfer immediately.

I stared into the eyes of the woman who had systematically destroyed my family.

My mother looked at me with an expression of pure, unadulterated regret.

She had favored Irene for years and treated me like absolute garbage.

Now, her life rested entirely in the hands of the daughter she had so casually discarded.

I told Irene that the banking application required dual authentication to move the charity funds.

I lied and said she needed to check her own phone to approve a verification text message.

Irene frowned in annoyance and slowly lowered her weapon to reach into her pocket.

She took her eyes off my mother for exactly two seconds.

That brief moment of distraction was all the federal snipers needed.

A deafening crack echoed through the rainy night sky.

A high-caliber bullet struck Irene squarely in her right shoulder.

She screamed in agony as the silver pistol flew out of her hand and clattered onto the wooden planks.

The sheer force of the impact spun her around completely.

She lost her footing on the slippery wet wood.

Irene tumbled backward and plunged heavily into the dark, freezing waters of the harbor.

Tactical teams swarmed the pier instantly, diving into the water to retrieve the fugitive.

I ran forward and pulled my terrified mother into a desperate embrace.

She sobbed into my shoulder, begging endlessly for my forgiveness.

I held her tight, but my eyes remained fixed on the dark water below.

Irene broke the surface of the water, coughing violently as the agents dragged her onto a police boat.
