Chapter 2 - The Unexpected Visitor

The man introduced himself as Special Agent Harris from the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
I stared at his credentials in absolute shock.
He asked if he could come inside to discuss a serious matter regarding my financial records.
I stepped aside and led him into my small living room.
My heart pounded aggressively against my ribs as he pulled a thick file from his briefcase.
He did not care about the car I had repossessed this morning.
That was merely a tiny drop in a massive ocean of criminal activity.
Agent Harris spread a dozen printed documents across my coffee table.
They were loan applications for massive commercial credit lines totaling over half a million dollars.
The collateral listed for every single loan was my candle business and my personal home.
I felt the blood drain completely from my face.
I told him I had never seen these papers before in my entire life.
He pointed to the bottom of the last page.
My signature was forged with absolute precision.
But that was not the detail that made my stomach turn entirely inside out.
Right next to my forged signature was a bright blue notary stamp.
It was the official seal validating the authenticity of the false documents.
I leaned closer and read the name printed on the blue ink.
It was my mother’s name.
She had used her state license to legally verify a fraudulent signature that effectively ruined my life.
Agent Harris watched my reaction very closely.
He told me that if the loans defaulted, the bank would seize everything I owned by the end of the week.
I realized my family had not just been ignoring me all these years.
They had been systematically bleeding me dry in the shadows.
I asked the agent what I needed to do to prove my innocence.
He handed me a business card and told me to get a confession on tape.
If I could not prove the forgery, I would be going to federal prison for bank fraud.
I grabbed my car keys and drove straight toward my mother’s house.
I was absolutely ready to tear their terrible secrets apart.
When I arrived at her property, the front door was slightly ajar.
May you like
I pushed it open and stepped into the silent hallway.
A heavy iron fireplace poker was suddenly swung directly toward my head from the shadows.
