Chapter 6 - The Nephew's Defection

Tyler sat across from me and trembled like a frightened child.
He confessed that Irene had beaten him mercilessly when he tried to warn me about the fire.
He admitted that he had poured the soda on me at the party on her strict orders.
She wanted me to leave the house because she had planned to poison my drink that evening.
My heart stopped as I realized how close I had come to dying at my own mother's birthday dinner.
Tyler explained that Irene was packing her bags to flee the country with the stolen loan money.
She needed my mother’s fingerprints to access the final offshore safety deposit boxes.
The detective standing in the corner of the room finally realized the massive scale of the threat.
He immediately unlocked my handcuffs and apologized for the terrible mistake.
Agent Harris burst into the precinct a few minutes later with a heavily armed tactical team.
We all rushed to the fleet of black federal vehicles waiting outside.
We drove at breakneck speeds toward my mother’s suburban house with the sirens blaring.
I prayed silently that we would not be too late to save her life.
The tactical team aggressively breached the front door with a heavy battering ram.
They swarmed the house with their weapons drawn and lasers scanning the rooms.
The house was completely empty and eerily silent.
Drawers were pulled open and financial documents were scattered across the living room floor.
Agent Harris called my name from the kitchen.
I ran into the room and stopped dead in my tracks.
A massive pool of fresh blood stained the white pristine tiles near the refrigerator.
A thick trail of crimson droplets led directly out the back door toward the garage.
May you like
I followed the blood trail with my stomach twisting in absolute dread.
We opened the garage door and found my brother Mike lying unconscious on the concrete floor.
