Chapter 1 - The Breaking Point

The cold soda soaked through my dress in an instant.
I gasped as the sticky liquid spread across my lap and dripped onto the hardwood floor.
Laughter erupted around the dining room table like a sudden crack of thunder.
My nephew Tyler stood above me with an empty cup and a cruel smirk on his face.
My mother wiped a tear of mirth from her eye and told him to go get a towel.
No one offered to help me.
No one asked if I was alright.
Mike and Irene simply chuckled and continued eating their expensive steak.
I looked at the people who were supposed to be my family.
They saw my pain and chose to use it as entertainment.
I stood up quietly and smoothed down my ruined skirt.
I did not yell or throw a fit.
I just picked up my purse and walked out the front door into the cool night air.
As I drove home, the silence in my car felt heavy and suffocating.
I thought about the luxury SUV parked in Mike’s driveway.
It was the car Tyler bragged about getting for his sixteenth birthday.
They conveniently forgot that my name was the only reason they secured the loan for that vehicle.
Mike had begged me to cosign because his credit was completely destroyed.
I had agreed to help them because I believed that family was supposed to support each other.
That illusion was permanently shattered tonight.
I walked into my quiet house and immediately opened my laptop.
I logged into the secure banking portal that held the auto loan.
It took exactly three clicks to completely remove myself as the financial guarantor.
I also flagged the account for immediate review due to a sudden change in financial liability.
The bank would immediately see Mike’s atrocious credit score and demand full payment by morning.
I closed the laptop and finally went to sleep with a strange sense of peace.
When I woke up, I checked my phone and saw fourteen missed calls from my brother.
A text message from Irene simply read that the repo men had taken their car at dawn.
I smiled and made myself a hot cup of coffee.
At exactly eight in the morning, a loud knock echoed from my front door.
May you like
I opened it expecting to see my furious brother demanding answers.
Instead, a tall man in a dark federal suit flashed a shiny gold badge in my face.
