Chapter 5 - Ashes and Alibis

I arrived at the shopping plaza to find my entire life’s work reduced to smoldering rubble.

Firetrucks surrounded the blackened shell of my beautiful store.

The scent of melted wax and charred wood made me physically nauseous.

Years of hard work and dedication had been erased in a matter of minutes.

A police officer approached me with a grim expression on his face.

I expected him to offer condolences for my devastating loss.

Instead, he asked me to turn around and place my hands behind my back.

He aggressively clicked a pair of cold steel handcuffs around my wrists.

He loudly read me my Miranda rights in front of a crowd of whispering onlookers.

I was being officially arrested for arson and massive insurance fraud.

I screamed that I was innocent and begged them to look for Irene.

The detective told me they had already spoken to my sister-in-law.

Irene had provided a flawless alibi and produced fake emails proving I was desperate for insurance money.

She had successfully framed me to ensure I would be locked away while she escaped.

I was thrown into a bleak and freezing interrogation room at the downtown precinct.

I sat alone in the dark for hours, completely terrified and feeling utterly defeated.

My family had stolen my money, my business, and now my freedom.

The heavy metal door eventually creaked open.

I expected the detective to return with a written confession for me to sign.

Instead, a bruised and terrified teenage boy walked into the room.

Tyler had a massive black eye and a split lip that was actively bleeding.

He looked at me with tears streaming down his dirt-streaked face.

He told me that he was finally ready to tell the police the truth about everything.

He whispered that Irene was going to kill my mother tonight.
