Chapter 7 - The Bloody Discovery
Elena let out a highly gut-wrenching, agonizing scream as she stared at the empty mattress.
"Where is she?!" Elena sobbed uncontrollably, tearing violently through the closet and throwing expensive toys aside.
Miller quickly ran over to the open window and shined his powerful light down into the pouring rain outside.
"There is a tall wooden ladder leaning heavily against the side of the house," he noted very grimly.
"Someone else completely sneaked in through the window while Victoria was busy distracting us downstairs."
Elena collapsed heavily onto the floor, her entire world completely and totally shattering into a million sharp pieces.
"They took my beautiful baby," she cried loudly, burying her face deeply into her trembling hands.
Suddenly, Miller's bright flashlight caught a very strange reflection underneath the edge of the empty crib.
He crouched down carefully and pulled out a small, metallic object from the thick carpet.
"Elena, look closely at this," he requested, holding up a remarkably shiny, silver cufflink.
Elena wiped her blinding tears away and squinted at the deeply engraved monogram on the cold metal.
It clearly bore the distinct initials D.R., which belonged exclusively to her ex-husband, David.
"David took her?" Elena asked aloud, completely and utterly bewildered by the shocking new discovery.
"He already has full legal custody, so why would he possibly sneak into his own house with a ladder?"
Before they could even begin to process the confusing mystery, they heard a very muffled cough nearby.
It was coming directly from the small, attached bathroom connected to the nursery.
Elena instantly jumped rapidly to her feet and rushed blindly toward the closed bathroom door.
She pushed it completely open and gasped incredibly loudly at the totally shocking sight before her.

David was sitting helplessly on the cold tile floor, clutching a terrified, crying Lily tightly in his arms.
And a massive, deeply bleeding wound was highly visible on the right side of his head.
