Chapter 1 - The Cold Rain

Elena sat frozen in her idling car, staring intently through the rain-streaked windshield.

The massive wrought-iron gates of the sprawling estate stood like the imposing bars of a prison.

It had been exactly three excruciating months since the local judge handed down his final, devastating ruling.

David, her wealthy and powerful ex-husband, had successfully won full custody of their beautiful daughter, Lily.

He had hired the most ruthless team of corporate lawyers in the entire state to completely destroy Elena's reputation.

They successfully painted her as unstable, using her brief struggle with postpartum depression as a vicious weapon against her.

But Elena knew the real, terrifying architect behind her tragic downfall.

It was Victoria, David's glamorous and remarkably cold-hearted new wife.

Victoria didn't have a single maternal bone in her elegant, calculating body.

She merely wanted the perfect family image to perfectly match her expensive new lifestyle and elite social circle.

Elena parked her rusty sedan in the dark shadows across the street, gripping her heavy binoculars tightly.

She raised them quickly to her eyes, focusing her vision directly on the second-floor window.

That room used to be a bright nursery filled with absolute warmth and innocent laughter.

Now, the lights were completely turned off, shrouded in an eerie, unsettling darkness.

Elena knew for an absolute fact that her little girl was completely terrified of the dark.

A sudden gust of wind violently shook the bare branches of the tall oak trees lining the street.

In the brief, eerie silence that followed, a horrific sound pierced the freezing night air.

It was a high-pitched, desperate wail that Elena recognized instantly in her soul.

Her two-year-old baby was crying hysterically from behind that thick glass window.

Elena's fierce maternal instincts flared up, burning much hotter than any rational thought.

She reached immediately for the door handle, fully prepared to scale the sharp iron fence with her bare hands.

She didn't care at all if she got arrested for trespassing on the billionaire's property.

Just as her shaking fingers grasped the cold plastic handle, her cell phone vibrated violently in her jacket pocket.

She pulled the glowing screen out and saw a strange notification from an unknown burner number.

It was a dark, grainy photograph clearly taken inside the mansion's lavish upstairs hallway.

Elena frantically zoomed in on the terrifying image, her blood running completely cold in her veins.

Someone was actively installing a heavy, industrial-grade metal padlock on the outside of the nursery door.
