Chapter 5 - The Missing Key

Elena felt a surge of pure, uncontrollable rage boiling deeply within her chest.
"I hear my baby crying behind that lock!" Elena shrieked, preparing to completely tackle the woman.
Victoria quickly sidestepped with elegant grace and firmly blocked the bottom step of the grand staircase.
"She is under my care now, so leave," Victoria stated with absolutely zero emotion in her voice.
Officer Miller stepped aggressively forward, his heavy hand resting intimidatingly on his tactical utility belt.
"Stand aside ma'am, we have a warrant," Miller demanded, holding the freshly signed paper directly in front of her face.
Victoria's smug, arrogant expression instantly shifted into a very dark mask of pure, unbridled rage.
"You cannot arrest me in my own home!" she yelled, attempting to forcefully swat the legal document away.
"Watch me," Miller replied coldly, firmly shoving the struggling woman completely out of their way.
Elena immediately sprinted up the thickly carpeted stairs, taking them desperately two at a time.
She ran blindly down the long, dimly lit hallway toward the familiar nursery located at the very end.
When she finally reached the heavy wooden door, her absolute worst fears were instantly confirmed.
"We found the external lock on the toddler's door," Miller announced grimly, catching up to her in the hallway.
It was a heavy, incredibly thick industrial-grade padlock secured tightly onto a newly installed steel latch.
Lily was still screaming wildly on the other side, her tiny, fragile fists pounding weakly against the hard wood.
Victoria slowly walked up the stairs, dangling a shiny brass key mockingly from her manicured fingers.

"You can have the room, but you will never get the key," Victoria laughed viciously.
She suddenly turned and threw the brass key directly into the large, roaring fireplace in the hallway lounge.
