Chapter 3 - The Emergency Warrant

Elena backed away slowly from the wooden desk in pure, unadulterated disbelief.
"You know I was just sitting quietly in my car on a public street," she pleaded desperately.
Miller held up his heavy hand to calm her rising panic.
"I know you are completely innocent, but David's private security cameras caught your license plate on the perimeter."
"If the corrupt police chief sees you standing in here, he will throw you directly into a holding cell."
Elena felt hot, bitter tears of sheer frustration streaming down her cold cheeks.
"I absolutely cannot go to jail while my helpless baby is locked in a dark room!" she cried out.
Miller quickly grabbed his heavy winter coat and his jingling set of patrol car keys.
"Follow me to the back exit right now, and do not make a single sound," he ordered strictly.
They sneaked carefully through the narrow, crowded hallway and slipped out into the dark alleyway unseen.
Miller opened the passenger door of his marked police cruiser and practically shoved her inside.
"I am going to get an honest emergency judge to sign this warrant directly from his private home."
"We are bypassing the police chief entirely because an innocent child's life is directly at stake."
They sped aggressively across the sleeping town, breaking multiple speed limits to reach the judge's suburban house.
The sleepy judge looked briefly at the terrifying photo, signed the official paper in his pajamas, and handed it firmly back.
"You have the full legal authority to breach the doors tonight, Miller," the old judge warned strictly.
They drove furiously back toward the massive estate, the police siren wailing loudly into the stormy night.

As they approached the long driveway, they saw thick black smoke rising ominously from the front of the property.
Victoria had intentionally set the wooden security guardhouse completely on fire to block their path.
