Chapter 8 - The Bloodline Secret

The words hung in the stale air of the ballroom, heavy and entirely toxic.
I felt a sudden, sharp coldness spread through my chest, but I refused to let her see me flinch.
"What kind of pathetic, desperate lie are you trying to spin now?" I asked, my voice remaining perfectly steady.
My mother laughed, a dry and hollow sound that sent painful shivers directly down my spine.
"It is not a lie, you arrogant little brat," she sneered, crossing her arms defensively.
"Aidan and I adopted you when you were just a baby because your real parents were completely worthless."
She thought this massive revelation would completely break my spirit and shatter my newfound confidence.
Instead, Julian let out a loud, genuinely amused chuckle that completely ruined her dramatic moment.
My mother glared at my husband, completely bewildered by his joyful reaction.
"Why are you laughing, she is just a dirty orphan with absolutely no real pedigree!" my mother shouted in frustration.
Julian reached into his briefcase and pulled out a sleek, black folder sealed with a silver crest.
"I am laughing because I already knew she was adopted," Julian stated calmly, handing the folder directly to me.
"When I decided to marry Mabel, my security team ran a comprehensive, international background check to ensure her safety."
I opened the black folder with trembling fingers, staring at the incredibly detailed DNA report inside.
My mother's face completely dropped, realizing her ultimate weapon had just been neutralized.
"Your biological mother died when you were very young, but your biological father is still very much alive," Julian told me softly.
Aidan suddenly rushed forward, his eyes wide with absolute terror.
"Do not say his name, Julian, please, I am begging you!" Aidan pleaded, falling straight to his knees.
I looked down at the official documents, reading the name printed in bold black ink.
My biological father was Vincent Moretti, the undisputed head of the most powerful organized crime syndicate in New York.
I looked at Aidan, finally understanding why he had always treated me with such extreme, terrified hatred.
"You stole me from a mafia boss?" I asked, my voice barely above a shocked whisper.
Aidan shook his head violently, tears pouring rapidly down his pathetic, aging face.
"I did not steal you, I was his accountant, and I took you to protect you from his violent lifestyle!" Aidan cried out.
Julian stepped closer to Aidan, looking down at him with ultimate, unyielding disgust.
"You did not take her to protect her, Aidan," Julian corrected him in a dangerously low tone.
"You took her so you could secretly steal three million dollars from Vincent's private offshore accounts without him noticing."
Aidan gasped loudly, covering his mouth as his deepest, darkest secret was finally dragged out into the open.

Julian pulled his cell phone from his pocket and pressed a single button.
"I sent Vincent the DNA evidence this morning, and he is extremely eager to meet the man who kidnapped his only daughter."
