Chapter 10 - The Aftermath

The sound of shattering glass completely deafened me as a high-caliber bullet ripped through the hotel lobby.

The massive projectile missed Julian by mere inches, embedding itself deeply into the marble pillar behind us.

Julian's security team reacted with terrifying speed, drawing their weapons and forming an impenetrable human shield around us.

Two highly trained guards sprinted out the shattered doors, aggressively hunting down the unseen sniper hiding across the street.

Julian pulled me tightly against his chest, keeping us completely flat against the cold marble floor.

"Are you hurt, Mabel?" Julian demanded, his voice entirely devoid of panic but filled with absolute authority.

"I am completely fine," I answered quickly, my heart hammering violently against my ribs.

Within sixty seconds, the head of security tapped his earpiece and gave Julian a sharp, confident nod.

"Target neutralized, sir, it was just a low-level thug hired by one of Marcus's angry creditors," the guard reported clearly.

Julian let out a heavy sigh of relief and gracefully helped me back to my feet.

He brushed the tiny shards of broken glass completely off my ruined silk wedding gown.

"I apologize for the dramatic exit, my love, but I promise the rest of our evening will be entirely peaceful," Julian assured me.

We walked outside into the cool Boston air and climbed safely into the heavily armored limousine.

As the car pulled smoothly away from the curb, I saw three police cruisers aggressively swarming the front of the hotel.

They were rushing inside to officially arrest my father for his massive embezzlement crimes.

I leaned my head against Julian's broad shoulder, feeling a profound, beautiful sense of ultimate peace.

My abusive family was completely destroyed, and I was finally safe with a man who truly loved me.

The heavy trauma of my past was officially erased, completely replaced by the bright promise of our future together.

We rode in comfortable, romantic silence all the way to Julian's heavily fortified mega-mansion in the countryside.

When we finally walked through the massive front doors, we were immediately greeted by Julian's elderly, loyal butler.

The butler bowed respectfully and handed Julian a thick, black envelope sealed with dark red wax.

"This was hand-delivered to the front gate exactly ten minutes ago, sir," the butler informed him quietly.

Julian frowned slightly and handed the heavy envelope directly to me.

I broke the wax seal with my thumb and slowly pulled out the single piece of paper hidden inside.

It was a high-resolution photograph of a beautiful woman standing in front of the Eiffel Tower, holding today's newspaper.

The woman looked exactly like me, proving my biological mother was not actually dead at all.

Written entirely in dark, fresh blood across the bottom of the photograph were the words, "Run before he finds you."
