Chapter 6 - The Mother's Secret

The smell of burning metal filled the sterile trauma room.

Terrence knew they had less than two minutes before Sinclair's men breached the door.

He grabbed a heavy oxygen tank and smashed it against the reinforced window looking out into the alley.

The glass spiderwebbed but did not break entirely.

He struck it three more times until a hole large enough to escape through shattered open.

He carefully lifted the unconscious Delilah, wrapping her in a thick hospital blanket to protect her from the glass.

He told Charlotte to climb through the window and wait in the dark alley.

Terrence squeezed through the jagged opening just as the trauma room door finally gave way.

He heard Sinclair shouting furiously from inside the room, but the rain muffled the sound.

Terrence carried the sick child through the muddy alley, staying completely in the shadows.

They managed to reach his police cruiser parked three blocks away.

He placed the girls in the back seat and sped out of the city limits, keeping his headlights off.

Charlotte leaned forward over the center console, her face pale in the darkness.

She told Terrence that her mommy had known daddy was bad before she died.

She said her mommy hid a special box at the old train station downtown.

Terrence changed direction, knowing this box was their only chance to expose the truth.

When they arrived at the abandoned station, they found the rusty locker Charlotte described.

Terrence pried it open with his baton and pulled out a leather journal and a small glass vial.

The journal contained a list of twelve other wealthy patients who had died under Sinclair's care.

Terrence opened the journal to the very last page, and his blood ran cold.

The final entry was a detailed blueprint of the exact police station Terrence worked at.
