Chapter 8 - The Kitchen Brawl

The freezing metal of the gun barrel pressed painfully against Clara's skull, completely freezing the blood in her veins.
Marcus chuckled softly in the dark kitchen, his breath smelling of stale coffee and absolute, unfiltered malice.
He whispered that he had been waiting in the shadows for hours, perfectly anticipating David's desperate, predictable rescue attempt.
Clara knew that if she screamed to warn David, Marcus would simply pull the trigger and end her life instantly.
She slowly raised her hands in a gesture of total surrender, completely relaxing her body to give the illusion of helpless defeat.
As Marcus reached out his left hand to grab her shoulder, Clara spun violently on her heel with lightning speed.
She slapped the barrel of the silenced pistol aggressively upward, sending a suppressed bullet tearing harmlessly through the kitchen ceiling.
Before Marcus could correct his aim, Clara drove her knee viciously into his stomach, forcing the breath from his lungs in a painful gasp.
She grabbed a heavy cast-iron skillet from the massive industrial stove and swung it wildly toward his head.
Marcus ducked with terrifying agility, the heavy iron pan smashing violently into the stainless steel refrigerator door instead.
He lunged forward and tackled Clara to the hard tile floor, his large hands wrapping tightly around her throat to choke the life out of her.
Clara gasped for air, her vision beginning to blur as she desperately clawed at his thick, unforgiving fingers.
She blindly reached out across the slippery floor, her hand desperately searching for anything to use as a weapon.
Her fingers brushed against the handle of a sharp, serrated bread knife that had fallen from the counter during their chaotic struggle.
With her last remaining ounce of strength, Clara gripped the knife and plunged it deep into the fleshy part of Marcus's thigh.
He roared in sheer agony, his grip instantly releasing from her throat as he stumbled backward, clutching his bleeding leg.
Clara scrambled to her feet, gasping for precious oxygen as she bolted out of the kitchen and into the crowded grand foyer.
The bright lights of the television cameras blinded her momentarily as she burst into the room covered in dark bruises and sweat.
The reporters gasped in shock, completely bewildered by the sudden appearance of the disgraced nanny who was supposedly in police custody.
Vanessa's fake, mournful smile vanished completely, replaced by an expression of pure, unadulterated panic and rage.
She screamed at the corrupt police detective to shoot the crazy woman who had broken into her grieving home.
The detective drew his service weapon and aimed it directly at Clara's chest, perfectly willing to commit murder in front of the live news cameras.
Before he could pull the trigger, the massive crystal chandelier hanging high above the foyer suddenly shattered into a million pieces.
David dropped from the second-story balcony on a tactical rope, crashing directly into the corrupt detective and pinning him to the marble floor.

He held a highly classified, encrypted digital tablet high in the air, yelling for every single news camera to focus on the bright screen.
The tablet was actively playing the high-definition video of Vanessa and Marcus plotting the murder from the hidden teddy bear camera.
