Chapter 5 - The Poisoned Whiskey

Clara's face was slammed aggressively against the cold marble floor as heavy steel handcuffs were locked tightly around her wrists.
She screamed in absolute confusion, begging the officers to look at the laptop that had just slid across the grand foyer.
A tall, stern detective walked through the front doors, carefully placing the black laptop into a clear, plastic evidence bag.
He looked down at Clara with an expression of pure, unfiltered disgust and read her her Miranda rights in a loud, commanding voice.
Vanessa stood dramatically at the top of the grand staircase, wearing a black silk robe and weeping hysterically into a lace handkerchief.
She told the detective that she had woken up to find her loving husband dead on the floor of his private study.
She claimed that Clara had snuck back into the mansion, poisoned David's evening whiskey, and attempted to steal his corporate files.
Clara shouted that it was a blatant lie, insisting that Marcus and Vanessa were the true monsters orchestrating the entire conspiracy.
The detective ignored her desperate pleas and ordered two officers to drag the screaming nanny out to the waiting patrol car.
As Clara was forced down the front steps, she saw the medical examiner wheeling a black body bag out of the mansion's side entrance.
Her heart completely shattered into a million pieces, realizing that the only man who could protect Lily was truly gone forever.
She was shoved roughly into the back seat of the police cruiser, staring helplessly at the massive iron gates of the estate.
Through the rain-streaked window, she saw a tiny, terrified face peering out from a second-story bedroom window.
It was Lily, pressing her small hands against the glass, crying silently as the only mother figure she had left was taken away.
Clara swore a silent, desperate oath that she would escape this nightmare and return to save the little girl from the evil stepmother.
The police cruiser sped away into the dark, stormy night, navigating the treacherous, winding mountain roads leading toward the city precinct.
The young officer driving the car was aggressively speeding, completely distracted by the intense radio chatter regarding the high-profile billionaire's death.
Clara sat in the back, testing the tension of the heavy steel handcuffs and frantically analyzing her surroundings for any possible avenue of escape.
Suddenly, a massive, heavily armored black SUV swerved violently out of a hidden side road, entirely blocking the wet highway.
The young police officer slammed on the brakes, sending the cruiser skidding wildly across the slick asphalt out of control.
The patrol car crashed heavily into the steel guardrail, deploying the airbags with a deafening explosion of white smoke and terrifying force.
Clara was thrown violently against the metal partition, her vision blurring as the agonizing shock of the impact rattled her entire body.
She heard the heavy doors of the black SUV open, followed by the terrifying, rhythmic sound of heavy combat boots approaching the wrecked cruiser.
A masked figure stepped up to the shattered window of the police car, holding a heavy tactical shotgun aimed directly at the unconscious driver.
Clara braced herself for the fatal shot, believing that Marcus had escaped the panic room and come to finish the job personally.
The masked figure suddenly lowered the weapon, reached through the broken glass, and expertly picked the locks on the patrol car's rear doors.

The door swung open, and the stranger pulled off his dark tactical mask to reveal a familiar, heavily bruised face.
It was David, completely alive, breathing heavily, and holding a small ring of handcuff keys in his shaking right hand.
