Chapter 2 - The Missing Memory

Clara was physically dragged out of the luxurious mansion by two private security guards as the pouring rain soaked her clothes.
She stood on the cold pavement outside the towering iron gates, realizing that her only proof of innocence had just been destroyed.
The tall stranger who crushed the camera lens had completely erased the only hope of saving Lily from her evil stepmother.
Clara refused to walk away and abandon the little girl she loved like her own daughter to a house full of dangerous monsters.
She knew that crushing the glass lens of a hidden camera did not necessarily destroy the digital memory card located deep inside the bear's stuffing.
If she could somehow break back into the heavily guarded estate and retrieve the toy, she could extract the video file and clear her name.
Clara waited for three agonizing hours in the freezing rain until the lights inside the massive house finally went completely dark.
She crept around to the back of the property and bypassed the complex security keypad using a secret code Lily had once shown her.
The heavy kitchen door clicked open silently, allowing Clara to slip back into the quiet, terrifying darkness of the mansion.
She moved like a ghost through the expansive hallways, avoiding the motion sensors she had memorized during her two years of employment.
Her destination was the main study where the horrible confrontation had taken place earlier that evening.
She pushed the study doors open and crawled across the expensive rug, searching frantically near the stone fireplace.
The brick hearth was completely empty, and there was absolutely no sign of the damaged teddy bear anywhere in the room.
Clara felt a sickening knot form in her stomach, realizing Vanessa must have locked the toy away to dispose of it permanently.
She quietly made her way up the grand staircase toward Vanessa's private master dressing room, hoping to find the bear hidden among the designer bags.
The door was slightly ajar, casting a thin sliver of pale moonlight across the pristine white carpet.
Clara slipped inside and began opening the heavy oak drawers, carefully searching through the endless piles of expensive silk scarves and jewelry.
At the very bottom of a locked cedar chest, her fingers finally brushed against the familiar, soft brown fur of Lily's beloved toy.
She pulled the teddy bear out and eagerly felt around the stuffed animal's chest to locate the hidden electronic compartment.
Her heart sank into her stomach when she realized the thick fabric had been violently sliced open with a very sharp blade.
The internal wiring was completely ripped out, and the tiny digital memory card was entirely missing from its secure plastic housing.
Clara realized with absolute dread that Vanessa already knew about the hidden camera and had successfully secured the incriminating footage.
Suddenly, the heavy dressing room door slammed shut behind her, and the bright overhead lights violently flickered on.
Vanessa was standing there in a silk robe, holding a gleaming silver handgun pointed directly at Clara's chest.
She smiled a wicked, triumphant smile and softly whispered that she had been waiting for the stupid nanny to return.
Vanessa slowly pulled the tiny digital memory card from her robe pocket and held it up to the bright light.
She told Clara that this tiny piece of plastic contained much more than just a video of a broken antique vase.

Vanessa confessed that the camera had actually been recording for over a year, capturing the true, terrifying cause of Lily's mother's death.
Before Clara could react, Vanessa tossed the memory card into a glass of acidic cleaning solvent resting on the vanity table.
