Chapter 10 - The Last Memory

Clara felt a surge of primal, unstoppable adrenaline explode through her veins as Vanessa aimed the gun at the innocent child.
She did not think about the bullets, the freezing rain, or the terrifying drop off the edge of the towering mansion roof.
Clara launched herself horizontally through the air, tackling Vanessa with the ferocious, protective strength of a true mother.
The silver handgun fired wildly into the dark sky as both women crashed violently onto the slippery, rain-slicked tiles near the edge.
Vanessa fought like a vicious demon, scratching and clawing at Clara’s face in a desperate attempt to regain control of the deadly weapon.
Clara ignored the agonizing pain and struck Vanessa hard across the jaw, finally knocking the gun completely out of her manicured hand.
The weapon skittered across the wet roof and fell harmlessly over the side of the building, disappearing into the dark abyss below.
Vanessa shrieked in absolute fury and lunged forward, trying to push Clara over the dangerous, completely unguarded ledge.
Suddenly, a pair of strong, familiar arms wrapped tightly around Vanessa’s waist and ripped her violently away from the exhausted nanny.
David threw the evil woman onto the hard rooftop and pinned her securely to the ground as heavily armed federal agents finally flooded the roof.
The FBI had seen the live television broadcast, bypassed the corrupt local police, and arrived just in time to secure the entire estate.
Vanessa was aggressively handcuffed and dragged away, screaming curses into the storm as her luxurious, criminal life permanently ended.
David rushed over and pulled Clara into a desperate, deeply emotional embrace, tears of pure relief streaming freely down his bruised face.
Little Lily ran across the wet roof and threw her tiny arms around both of them, sobbing happily into Clara’s warm, safe shoulder.
The nightmare was finally, completely over, and the dark shadow that had haunted the beautiful mansion was gone forever.
Months later, the crisp, golden sunlight of autumn filtered warmly through the large windows of their brand new, peaceful suburban home.
David had officially promoted Clara from a nanny to his equal partner, and they were preparing to adopt Lily together as a real family.
Vanessa and Marcus were serving consecutive life sentences in a maximum-security federal prison, completely cut off from their stolen wealth.
Clara smiled happily as she unpacked the final cardboard box in Lily’s new, brightly colored bedroom.
She reached into the bottom of the box and pulled out a small, ornate wooden jewelry box that had belonged to Lily’s biological mother.
As Clara opened the delicate lid to place it on the dresser, a hidden, false bottom suddenly popped loose, revealing a yellowed envelope.
She carefully opened the sealed letter, expecting a sweet, forgotten message of love left behind for the little girl.

Instead, Clara’s blood ran completely cold as she read the terrifying first line written in the mother’s frantic, jagged handwriting.
"If Vanessa is dead, the real nightmare is just beginning."
