Chapter 1 - The Fireplace

The heavy oak doors of the study slammed shut and trapped the thick, suffocating tension inside the room.

Vanessa snatched the worn teddy bear from Lily's small, trembling hands with a cruel smirk resting on her flawless face.

She knew the stuffed animal was the only thing keeping the little girl connected to the beautiful memory of her deceased mother.

Lily begged and cried hysterically, reaching her tiny arms out to retrieve the precious, irreplaceable toy.

Vanessa laughed a cold, heartless laugh and hurled the bear directly toward the roaring flames of the massive stone fireplace.

Lily let out a blood-curdling scream and sprinted toward the blazing fire without a single thought for her own safety.

Clara, the devoted nanny who had been secretly watching from the hallway, burst into the room just in time.

She lunged forward desperately, wrapping her strong arms around Lily's waist and pulling her back violently from the scorching heat.

The old teddy bear bounced off the iron fire grate and landed safely on the edge of the dusty brick hearth.

Vanessa realized her cruel plan to destroy the toy had failed miserably in front of an unexpected witness.

She quickly changed her entire demeanor, her dark eyes darting around the room as she formulated a new, highly sinister narrative.

Vanessa grabbed a priceless antique vase from the mahogany side table and smashed it aggressively against the hardwood floor.

She then ran her hands wildly through her perfectly styled blonde hair, tearing violently at the collar of her expensive silk blouse.

Fake tears immediately began to stream down her face as she forced herself to hyperventilate and sob uncontrollably like a helpless victim.

Clara held a terrified Lily tightly against her chest, completely bewildered by the sudden, dramatic theatrical performance happening before her.

Before Clara could even open her mouth to demand an explanation, the heavy study doors swung open once again.

David, Lily's wealthy and perpetually exhausted father, stepped into the room and froze in absolute horror at the chaotic scene.

Vanessa immediately threw herself into his strong arms, weeping loudly and pointing a shaking, accusatory finger directly at Clara.

She hysterically claimed that the nanny had completely lost her mind and had just tried to push her into the blazing fire.

David looked at the broken glass on the rug, his frantic wife crying in his arms, and the terrified nanny holding his daughter.

His face hardened with absolute, unforgiving fury as he pulled his sleek cell phone from his tailored suit pocket.

He loudly declared that Clara was fired immediately and that he was calling the police to have her arrested for felony assault.

Clara tried frantically to defend herself, but she suddenly noticed something incredibly important resting in the shadows near the fire.

Vanessa had completely forgotten about the old, worn teddy bear resting safely on the stone hearth.

Hidden deep inside the bear's left glass eye was a high-definition, motion-activated camera that Lily's biological mother had installed months before she died.

Clara knew that the tiny camera had just successfully recorded every single second of the absolute truth.

However, Clara's heart stopped completely when she saw a tall, mysterious man step out from the dark balcony behind David.

The terrifying stranger slowly walked over to the fireplace, picked up the teddy bear, and smiled a chilling smile.

He looked directly at Clara, raised his hand, and violently crushed the bear's glass eye into a million tiny pieces.
