Chapter 7 - The Unseen Threat

I was sitting comfortably in my hospital bed, gently folding the tiny pink baby clothes Mark had brought me.
My physical recovery was going exceptionally well, and the doctors planned to discharge me by the weekend.
Mark walked into the room carrying two cups of hot coffee and a very serious expression on his handsome face.
He quietly informed me that there had been a massive, suspicious fire at Valerie’s apartment complex the previous night.
He told me that Alex had barely survived the blaze and was currently heavily sedated in the burn unit three floors below us.
I felt a strange, complicated mixture of lingering pity and absolute, undeniable indifference toward my ex-husband.
Mark softly promised me that he would personally ensure Alex never came near me or my daughter ever again.
We drank our coffee in comfortable silence, finally enjoying a rare moment of genuine, uninterrupted peace.
Mark eventually had to leave for his afternoon shift, kissing my forehead gently before walking out the door.
An hour later, a hospital nurse wearing baggy green scrubs and a large surgical mask quietly entered my room.
She picked up my medical chart and slowly approached my bed with a syringe filled with a clear, unknown liquid.
I smiled politely and asked her what type of medication she was preparing to inject into my intravenous line.
May you like
The nurse did not answer, slowly reaching up to pull the blue surgical mask entirely off her face.
My heart stopped completely as I stared at Valerie’s severely burned, deeply scarred, and completely terrifying smiling face.
