He screamed my name with a terrified, broken voice that I completely ignored.
Before his heavy boots could get any closer, a massive hand slammed aggressively into his chest.
His commanding officer, Captain Miller, pushed Alex backward with a look of absolute, furious disgust.
The captain loudly demanded to know why Alex had bypassed a critical pregnant woman to rescue an uninjured bystander.
Alex frantically tried to explain that he panicked in the dark and just grabbed the first person he saw.
The captain shook his head slowly, reaching out and forcefully ripping the lieutenant badge directly off my husband’s uniform.
He coldly informed Alex that the elderly man from the elevator had just died because Alex had completely ignored the triage protocol.
Alex fell to his knees in the center of the lobby, sobbing uncontrollably as the sheer magnitude of his failure crushed him.

Valerie slowly walked up behind him, entirely ignoring the chaotic medical emergency unfolding around us.
She placed her hands gently on his shaking shoulders and smiled a deeply unsettling, victorious smile.
