Chapter 3 - The Awakening

I slowly opened my eyes to the harsh, blinding fluorescent lights of the hospital intensive care unit.

A continuous electronic beeping sound echoed softly through the sterile, quiet room.

I instinctively moved my hands to my swollen stomach, praying silently for any sign of life.

A strong, familiar hand gently covered mine to stop me from panicking in the bed.

Mark was sitting quietly in a plastic visitor chair, still wearing his soot-stained uniform pants.

He smiled warmly and softly told me that the doctors had managed to stabilize both me and my beautiful baby girl.

Tears of profound relief streamed freely down my face as I thanked him for saving our lives.

Suddenly, the heavy wooden door to my hospital room violently swung open.

Alex burst into the room, looking completely exhausted and reeking of cheap coffee and stale smoke.

He fell to his knees beside my bed, wildly begging me to forgive his terrible, unforgivable mistake.

I looked at the man I had once deeply loved and felt absolutely nothing but cold, empty indifference.

I quietly ordered him to get out of my room and never speak to me again.

Alex desperately grabbed the edge of my bed, crying that Valerie had completely lied about being pregnant just to manipulate him.

Before he could continue his pathetic apologies, a tall man in a tailored suit confidently stepped into the room.

My attorney handed Alex a thick envelope containing divorce papers and a strict, permanent restraining order.
