Chapter 4 - The Sabotage

Alex stood completely paralyzed with the legal documents trembling in his hands.
He tried to argue with the attorney, but Mark immediately stepped forward to physically block his path.
The rookie firefighter stared coldly at his former superior officer, ready to forcefully remove him from the room.
Alex finally realized he had completely lost everything, turning around and walking out of the hospital with his head hung low.
Once the room was quiet again, I looked at Mark and asked him exactly what he had seen in the elevator.
Mark pulled his cell phone from his pocket and told me that something about the rescue had felt completely wrong.
He explained that he had used his department credentials to request the security camera footage from the department store lobby.
He handed me the phone and pressed play on a highly classified, grainy black-and-white video.
The footage clearly showed the moments just before I stepped into the elevator on that fateful afternoon.
Valerie was standing near the maintenance closet, handing a thick envelope of cash to the building manager.
She watched me walk into the elevator and immediately nodded to the corrupt manager.

The manager walked into the electrical room and intentionally pulled the main breaker switch to disable the backup generator.
Valerie had completely orchestrated the entire terrifying ordeal just to force Alex to choose between us in a life-or-death situation.
