Chapter 7 - The Blood Trail

The heavy silver pistol clicked loudly, but no bullet fired from the jammed chamber.
Marissa stared at the weapon in absolute shock, frantically trying to clear the malfunction.
I didn't give her a second chance to fix it.
I swept her legs out from under her, sending her crashing onto the hard metal grating of the catwalk.
Before she could recover, I grabbed a heavy zip tie from my pocket and tightly bound her wrists to the railing.
I scooped up Mason, who was trembling violently, and promised him we were going to get his sister back.
We rushed down the rusty stairs and ran out of the warehouse just as a dozen police cruisers swarmed the parking lot.
Detective Miller stepped out of an ambulance, his arm heavily bandaged, and ordered his officers to secure Marissa.
I told Miller that Brian was heading to an airstrip to smuggle Lily out of the country for the final payout.
Mason tugged on my sleeve and pulled a small, flashing GPS tracker from his pocket.
He bravely explained that he had slipped the device into his sister's jacket pocket while they were trapped in the closet at home.
Miller checked the coordinates on his police laptop and realized Brian was heading toward a private, unlisted airfield near the border.
He told me the airfield was completely owned by a notorious, heavily armed human trafficking syndicate.
There was no time to wait for federal backup or a SWAT team to mobilize.
I jumped into the driver's seat of an abandoned police cruiser, and Miller immediately slid into the passenger side with a shotgun.
Mason strapped himself into the back seat, acting as our personal navigator by reading the GPS coordinates aloud.
We tore down the highway at over a hundred miles an hour, the police siren clearing the civilian traffic from our path.
The sun was fully up now, casting long, dramatic shadows across the flat, rural landscape.

We approached the heavy steel gates of the private airfield just as a massive jet engine began to spool up in the distance.
Miller yelled for me to brake, but I slammed my foot on the gas pedal instead.
