Chapter 1 - The Locked Door

The faint knock echoed from the hallway closet, freezing the blood in my veins.

Lily whimpered against my chest, her small hands twisting into the fabric of my shirt.

She begged me again not to open the door, tears streaming down her burning, feverish cheeks.

I gently laid her on the living room sofa and grabbed the heavy iron poker from the fireplace.

The strange, chemical smell in the house seemed to grow stronger as I approached the painted wooden door.

I gripped the brass handle, took a deep breath, and yanked the door open, raising the iron poker defensively.

A small, bruised figure tumbled out of the darkness and collapsed directly onto my boots.

It was my ten-year-old grandson, Mason.

He was not in Florida celebrating his birthday with his parents at a theme park.

His clothes were torn, his face was pale, and his wrists bore dark red marks from heavy zip ties.

He was desperately clutching a cracked tablet to his chest as if his life depended on it.

I dropped the iron poker and pulled him into my arms, asking him what his father had done to him.

Mason could barely speak, but he managed to point a shaking finger toward the kitchen counter.

He whispered that his parents had made him drink the same terrible medicine they gave to his sister.

Suddenly, the loud wail of approaching sirens broke the deadly silence of the suburban neighborhood.

Two paramedics rushed through the open front door, carrying heavy medical bags and shouting for the patients.

I pointed them toward Lily on the couch, explaining that she had been drugged with some kind of adult sleeping pill.

One of the paramedics, a tall man with cold eyes, immediately pulled a large syringe from his pocket.

He didn't check her pulse or ask about her symptoms before uncapping the long needle.

I noticed his uniform lacked a standard county medical badge, and his boots were covered in fresh, red clay.

I stepped forward and grabbed his wrist firmly, demanding to know exactly what medication he was trying to inject into my granddaughter.

The man glared at me, violently shoved me backward into the wall, and raised the needle directly toward Lily's neck.
