Chapter 5 - The Hunt Begins

I stole a motorcycle from the subway parking lot and tore through the morning traffic like a madman.
I ignored every red light and stop sign, my mind entirely focused on reaching the hospital before Brian could escape.
When I arrived at the emergency entrance, the scene was absolute chaos.
Two police cruisers were parked at weird angles, and Detective Miller was bleeding profusely on the concrete sidewalk.
I slid the motorcycle to a halt and rushed to his side, tearing my shirt to create a makeshift bandage for his shoulder.
Miller gasped in pain and told me Brian's men had ambushed him in the hallway.
He pointed a shaking, bloody finger toward a massive black SUV speeding away at the far end of the street.
He said they took Lily, but Mason had managed to break away and run into the hospital's underground maintenance tunnels.
I helped Miller sit up against a concrete pillar and told him to call every honest cop he knew.
I jumped back onto the stolen motorcycle and raced after the speeding black SUV.
The chase led us out of the city center and toward the abandoned, decaying industrial warehouse district by the river.
The SUV suddenly swerved through a rusted chain-link fence and disappeared inside a massive, dark shipping facility.
I ditched the motorcycle and crept inside through a shattered side window, keeping to the deep shadows.
The warehouse was completely silent, except for the dripping of water from a broken pipe high above.
I spotted the black SUV parked in the center of the concrete floor, its doors wide open and the engine still running.
Lily was nowhere to be seen inside the vehicle.
Suddenly, a terrifying scream echoed from the upper catwalks overlooking the warehouse floor.
It was Mason.
I looked up and saw my daughter-in-law, Marissa, dangling the ten-year-old boy over a fifty-foot drop by his shirt collar.
May you like
She was holding a loaded silver pistol in her other hand, aiming it directly at Mason's terrified head.
Marissa smiled down at me and demanded I hand over the trust folder, or she would drop him onto the concrete.
