Chapter 2 - The Lethal Dose

I scrambled off the floor and tackled the fake paramedic before the needle could pierce Lily's skin.

We crashed over the glass coffee table, shattering it into hundreds of jagged pieces across the living rug.

The syringe flew from his hand and embedded itself deep into the drywall near the front door.

The second paramedic drew a dark metal baton, completely dropping the illusion of being a medical professional.

Before he could swing it, I kicked his knee with all my strength, sending him crashing to the floor in agony.

The first man scrambled to his feet, cursing loudly, and sprinted out the front door into the dark night.

His partner limped closely behind him, leaving their fake medical bags behind in their desperate escape.

I locked the deadbolt and called the police, demanding that heavily armed officers be sent to the house immediately.

When the real authorities finally arrived, Detective Miller took one look at the syringe in the wall and called for a hazardous materials unit.

Miller informed me that the liquid in the needle was a lethal dose of synthetic muscle relaxant, meant to stop a heart instantly.

They rushed both children to the local hospital under heavy police guard to flush the toxins from their fragile systems.

I sat by their hospital beds for hours, holding their small hands and praying for them to open their eyes.

Around dawn, Mason finally stirred, blinking weakly against the harsh fluorescent lights of the hospital room.

He immediately reached under his hospital gown and pulled out the cracked tablet he had hidden from the nurses.

He told me I needed to see what he had recorded before his father locked him in the dark closet.

I plugged the tablet into a wall charger, and a grainy video immediately began playing on the damaged screen.

The footage showed my son, Brian, and his wife, Marissa, sitting at the kitchen table counting massive stacks of cash.

Brian casually mentioned that the overseas buyers would finalize the adoption transfer the moment the kids were pronounced dead.

My heart shattered as Marissa laughed, stating that my late wife's massive trust fund would finally default entirely to them.

As the video ended, Detective Miller rushed into the room with a look of pure terror on his face.

He told me that someone had just breached the hospital's security system, and the elevators were locking down.
