Chapter 6 - The Warehouse Standoff

I slowly raised my hands and stepped out of the shadows, making sure Marissa could clearly see the manila folder.
I told her she could have every single penny of the trust money if she just let my grandson walk away safely.
Marissa laughed, a cold and hollow sound that echoed terribly through the cavernous industrial building.
She screamed that she never wanted to be a mother and that adopting the kids was just a stupid legal requirement in my wife's will.
She admitted that she and Brian had hated every single moment of raising them for the past five years.
I slowly climbed the rusted metal stairs to the catwalk, never breaking eye contact with the psychotic woman.
I tossed the thick folder onto the metal grating halfway between us, begging her to take it and leave the kids alone.
Marissa holstered her silver pistol and greedily reached down to grab the legal documents.
In that brief second of distraction, Mason fiercely bit down on her hand, forcing her to drop him onto the safe side of the catwalk.
Marissa shrieked in pain and reached for her weapon again, completely enraged by the child's defiance.
I lunged forward, closing the distance between us, and tackled her hard against the heavy safety railing.
The metal groaned under our combined weight as I fought to keep the gun pointed away from Mason.
Suddenly, the deafening sound of a high-powered rifle shot shattered the silence of the warehouse.
The bullet sparked against the metal railing just inches from my face, forcing me to drop to the ground.
I looked down and saw Brian standing near the black SUV, aiming a military-grade sniper rifle directly at us.
He wasn't alone.
He was holding Lily by her hair, keeping her positioned strictly as a human shield so I couldn't throw anything at him.
Brian yelled that the trust documents were completely useless now because the international flight was already fueled and waiting.
May you like
He dragged a screaming Lily into the SUV and sped out of the warehouse, leaving Marissa behind to finish us off.
Marissa stood over me with her pistol raised, a cruel smile spreading across her face as she pulled the trigger.
