Chapter 9 - The Final Chase

The FBI agent explained that Diane and Lauren had kidnapped my dying father to prevent him from testifying against them.
Without his direct confession regarding the forged signatures, their highly paid lawyers could potentially ruin the federal case.
I realized with absolute horror that my mother was entirely willing to let my father die to protect her stolen wealth.
I pulled out my phone and frantically opened a hidden family tracking application I had installed years ago.
I had secretly placed the tracker on my father's phone because he used to wander when his gambling debts stressed him out.
A small, pulsing red dot appeared on the digital map, moving rapidly away from the downtown hospital district.
I showed the screen to the FBI agent, and my blood ran completely cold when I recognized their exact destination.
They were driving directly toward the beautiful, newly renovated four-bedroom house Ethan and I had just purchased outside Columbus.
Diane was planning to destroy the massive property we bought with my grandmother’s money, and she was taking my father with her.
The FBI agent immediately ordered his tactical team to mobilize, and he shoved Ethan and me into the back of his armored SUV.
We sped through the dark, rain-slicked highways at over a hundred miles per hour, praying we would not be too late.
We arrived at our new neighborhood just as thick, black smoke began billowing into the stormy night sky.
Diane’s black SUV was parked aggressively on our fresh green lawn, the driver's side door left completely wide open.
I sprinted out of the federal vehicle before it even fully stopped, completely ignoring Ethan screaming for me to stay back.
I ran toward the front porch of our new home, smelling the overwhelming, toxic stench of cheap gasoline.
Lauren was standing in the doorway, pouring a massive red jerrycan of fuel completely across our beautiful hardwood floors.
Diane was kneeling on the front lawn, holding a silver lighter and pressing a pistol against the back of my father's head.
My dad looked incredibly weak, slumping heavily against the wet grass in his thin, blue hospital gown.
Diane screamed that if I could not be a good, compliant daughter, I did not deserve a house or a family.
She raised the silver lighter, her thumb hovering aggressively over the spark wheel to ignite the massive trail of gasoline.
The FBI tactical team swarmed the lawn, aiming dozens of bright red laser sights directly at Diane and Lauren’s chests.
The federal agent commanded them to drop the weapon and the lighter immediately, or they would be authorized to use lethal force.
Diane laughed a maniacal, broken laugh, claiming that without my father's testimony, she would be out of jail by morning.
My father suddenly coughed violently, forcing himself to sit up slightly straighter on the wet grass.

He reached into the pocket of his hospital gown and pulled out a small, blinking black digital recording device.
He looked at my mother with absolute disgust and stated that he had been secretly recording her evil plans for the last forty-eight hours.
